Can I apply for an Learnership while studying?

A Learnership is a work-based learning program that leads to a nationally recognized qualification in a field of work. But what can you apply for during your studies?

An Learnership is a great opportunity to gain work experience after obtaining your qualification from either school, college or university, especially one that relates to your qualification.

But is it possible to apply for one during your studies? The answer is no. This is because apprentices must attend classes at a college or training center in order to complete classroom learning.

After that, they must also undergo on-the-job training in the workplace. This means that if you are unemployed, you can only apply for an Learnership if an employer is willing to give you the necessary work experience.

The Ministry of Labor keeps track of the Learnership system. For more information on what Learnerships are available, visit your local employment center or the Department of Labor’s provincial office.

The Ministry of Labor website also has a list of all registered Learnerships. Go to http://www.labour.gov.za/ Go to “useful documents” then go to “Registered learnerships by SETAs”

In addition, some Learnerships do not require students to meet entry requirements, but others require students to have a grade 12 certificate. An Learnership usually takes a year to complete, while some Learnerships can take two or more years to complete.
