The programme is designed to equip participants with a strong foundation in retail operations, opening the door to future employment and advancement in the industry.

About the Programme

This is a structured 12-month learnership that runs from August 2025 to July 2026, during which successful applicants will be placed in various Massmart stores across multiple provinces. Participants will receive practical, on-the-job training while also studying toward a National Certificate in Wholesale and Retail Operations – a recognised qualification accredited by the relevant Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA).

This unique combination of academic learning and work experience gives learners the opportunity to develop essential skills in customer service, merchandising, stock control, sales, and the use of digital retail tools. In addition to professional development, participants will be exposed to the core values and operational standards that define Massmart’s success in the retail market.

What the Learnership Offers

• A 12-month full-time, paid learnership contract
• Practical work experience in Massmart stores located in Gauteng, North West, Eastern Cape, Free State, and KwaZulu-Natal
• A blend of classroom-based instruction, online learning, and hands-on training in a live retail environment
• Exposure to multiple areas of retail including customer engagement, visual merchandising, inventory management, and back-of-house operations
• A nationally recognised National Certificate in Wholesale and Retail Operations upon successful completion

Minimum Entry Requirements

To qualify for the programme, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Be a South African citizen with a valid South African ID
• Have completed Grade 12 / Matric with a pass in English and Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy
• Be currently unemployed, or employed for less than 12 months with any one employer
• Must not be enrolled in any full-time study or another SETA-funded programme for 2025/2026
• Be willing and able to work retail hours, including weekends and public holidays, on a fixed-term contract
• Individuals living with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply
