City of Cape Town Metro Police and Traffic Learnerships 2025 – Now Open for Applications

The City of Cape Town is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for unemployed individuals residing within the metropolitan area. Applications are now open for the 2025 Metro Police and Traffic Learnership Programme. This initiative is designed to develop skilled professionals who are passionate about public safety, law enforcement, and serving their communities.

Overview of the Programme

This learnership aims to provide comprehensive training and development in the fields of traffic and metropolitan policing. Selected candidates will undergo an intensive, structured training programme leading to the attainment of a Further Education and Training Certificate: Road Traffic Law Enforcement, along with additional law enforcement skills that are essential for the profession.

Minimum Entry Requirements

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be considered:

  • Hold a Grade 12 (Matric) certificate – official documentary proof is required.
  • Be a permanent resident within the City of Cape Town’s jurisdiction – proof of residence must be provided.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English and at least one other official South African language.
  • Be currently unemployed. Students and individuals participating in the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) are eligible to apply.
  • Be between the ages of 18 and 35 years old.
  • Be in excellent medical and physical condition, as candidates will be required to undergo demanding physical training as part of the selection process.
  • Possess a valid Code B (manual transmission) driver’s licence.
  • Have no criminal record – fingerprint and ID number checks will be conducted.
  • No visible tattoos when wearing the official uniform of the service.
  • Be mentally resilient and capable of handling high-pressure, high-stress environments.
  • Be able to work well within a team and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.

Physical Fitness Assessment

Shortlisted candidates will be required to successfully complete a comprehensive physical fitness evaluation. This testing phase is elimination-based; failure to meet the required standard at any stage will result in disqualification from the process.

The compulsory fitness assessments include:

  • A 2.4 km run (completion time: Males – 11 minutes, Females – 13 minutes)
  • Push-up test: 30 push-ups in 60 seconds
  • Sit-up test: 30 sit-ups in 60 seconds
  • Dead load carry over 100 meters while carrying two 25kg weights
  • Tyre drag over a 20-meter distance
  • 20-meter shuttle runs: 10 shuttles in 60 seconds
  • 2.1 meter wall climb
  • Motorcycle reach test
  • Comfort swim (any stroke, unassisted)

Note: Due to the physically strenuous nature of the testing, pregnant applicants will not be permitted to take part in these assessments.

Additional Requirements and Assessments

Candidates who pass the fitness assessments will also be required to:

  • Successfully complete a written assessment and participate in a formal interview.
  • Undergo medical evaluation conducted by the City.
  • Pass a drug screening test administered at a designated City facility.
  • Submit to a driver competence evaluation.
  • Accept and adhere to the Code of Conduct of the Public Safety Training College.
  • Meet all academic and behavioral performance standards set by the training institution in accordance with unit standard regulations.
