Gold Fields’ South Deep Gold Mine is currently inviting applications from individuals residing in our host communities to apply for the 2025 Mining Learnership Programme. This initiative forms part of Gold Fields’ commitment to creating sustainable opportunities and developing talent within the communities in which we operate.

About the Learnership Programme

The Mining Learnership Programme at South Deep Gold Mine is a formal training opportunity that combines both theoretical classroom training and practical on-site experience. Learners will be exposed to various mining-related tasks and will be given the opportunity to develop a strong foundation for a future in underground mining operations.

This programme is aligned with the requirements of the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE). Upon successful completion, learners will be equipped with relevant skills and certifications to enhance their employability within the mining industry.

Who Can Apply?

In line with our commitment to uplift and empower local communities, this opportunity is available exclusively to individuals who qualify as Host Community Applicants. To be considered under this category, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

• Reside in one of the following Host Communities:
  Bekkersdal, Zuurberkom, Thusanang, Hillshaven, Westonaria, Poortjie, Simunye, Kalbasfontein, or Jachtfontein,
  OR
• Have successfully completed Grade 12 or Matric at a school located within any of the communities listed above.

Minimum Entry Requirements

To be eligible for selection into the Mining Learnership Programme, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

• Educational Qualifications:
  Grade 12 (Matric) with a pass in two languages, or a National Certificate (N3) equivalent qualification.
• Experience:
  At least 2 years of experience in a mining operation will be advantageous.
• Medical Fitness:
  Must be declared medically fit for the role and the mining environment, as determined by a risk-based medical assessment at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre.
  Additionally, applicants must successfully complete a Heat Tolerance Screening Test, along with any other assessments required to determine suitability for work in an underground mining environment.

Key Responsibilities and Competencies

During the learnership programme, learners will be required to:

• Fully comply with all mine health, safety, and environmental regulations at all times.
• Participate in all scheduled technical and practical training sessions as outlined by MQA and DMRE.
• Demonstrate consistent performance in all technical assessments and evaluations.
• Take responsibility for personal development by actively engaging with mentors, supervisors, and the Human Resources Development (HRD) team.
• Maintain a high level of discipline and professionalism, in line with company policies and the conditions of employment.
• Display a commitment to teamwork and contribute positively as part of a diverse and inclusive team.
