Apprenticeship Opportunity – Tractor Mechanic / Earthmoving Mechanic
Location: Various Branches Across South Africa
Employment Type: Part-Time (Structured Apprenticeship Program)
AFGRI is proud to offer a valuable apprenticeship opportunity for aspiring artisans who are passionate about agricultural and heavy machinery mechanics. We are seeking committed, self-driven individuals who are eager to develop their technical skills and build a long-term career in the agricultural engineering sector.
This program is designed to equip learners with comprehensive, hands-on experience and academic instruction, under the guidance of experienced mentors and industry specialists. Through this apprenticeship, successful candidates will gain exposure to practical and theoretical training necessary to become fully qualified Tractor Mechanics or Earthmoving Mechanics.
About the Apprenticeship
The apprenticeship is structured as a three-year in-service training program, allowing individuals to develop skills and knowledge both in the field and in classroom environments. This is not merely a training opportunity—it is a career pathway that offers meaningful work, professional development, and the potential for long-term growth within AFGRI.
Probationary Period
The first six months of the apprenticeship serve as a probationary phase. This period provides both AFGRI and the apprentice with the opportunity to assess the suitability of the working relationship. Either party may terminate the arrangement during this time without penalty.
Upon successful completion of the probation, the apprentice will enter into a formal contract with AFGRI for the remainder of the training program.
Training and Development
Apprentices will undergo a mix of academic and practical training, including:
- Practical hands-on training at a certified Training Institute in phased modules.
- Theoretical studies through distance learning institutions (N subjects), with Saturday classes expected when necessary.
- Product-specific training at the John Deere Training Facility in Boksburg and with other major suppliers.
- Internal technical training facilitated by AFGRI specialists and senior technicians.
AFGRI covers the cost of all training—provided that modules and assessments are passed. Should any course or module be failed, the apprentice will be responsible for the cost of repeating the training.
This program is governed by a three-year contractual agreement. Should the apprentice terminate the agreement prematurely or fail to complete the “work-back” period after qualification, the apprentice may be required to reimburse the company for training costs. The total duration of the contract cannot exceed four years.
